[翠玉白菜] This DIY class offered by the Silk's Palace gives visitors the opportunity to make an edible version of Taiwan’s National Palace Museum’s Jadeite Cabbage 🥬 . The National Palace Museum in Taipei [故宮] is home to nearly 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts dating back to over 8,000 years. Fun fact: All of the artifacts are stored in caves behind the museum with only a portion on display at the actual museum at any given time. Due the vast number of artifacts and their rotation schedule, the average person won’t be able to view all of the treasures in a lifetime!!

I am a Taiwanese-American from the Bay Area who grew up knowing very little about my heritage. I became a travel scout for a local tour agency in Taiwan (as well as a writer for Taiwan’s Tourism Bureau) touring the entire island for off-the-beaten-path destinations that provide the most unique and authentic Taiwanese experiences for foreign tourists. I quickly noticed that these rich and diverse places were not only unknown to most locals, but they were completely hidden from the rest of the world. As such, I decided to start writing reviews of these hidden gems in English as a Local Guide. Now as a Level 6 guide that ranks in the top 5%, I know that my reviews are being seen. It has been a privilege to be able to learn about my heritage while simultaneously giving back to my community as a Local Guide. Google Maps and the Local Guides program has allowed me to put Taiwan on a map, and it’s something I look forward to continuing as a permanent resident of this island!

The only place to hot air ballon in Taiwan is in Luye, Taitung.
