In a country where there is universal healthcare, multi-generational living, and a very low poverty rate, it’s hard to imagine that 22,000 people in Taipei would have nowhere to go and nothing to eat during the Lunar New Year festival.
But that’s exactly what I witnessed this year as a volunteer for a local homeless shelter here. Since the early 90’s, various humanitarian groups and shelters hold an outdoor banquet for the homeless, independent elderly, and single mothers during Lunar New Year. With the help of friends, family, and complete strangers, I raised over $1,000 for this event!! HUGE thank you to all you kind souls who provided the needy with not only food, but also a sense of belonging during this rejoiceful holiday.
